Indonesia has relatively high tectonic and volcanic activities. It lies on the convergence between the Eurasian, Indo-Australian, Pacific, and Philippine Sea Sunda megathrust is a 5, km long fault located off southern coasts of Sumatra, Java and Lesser Sunda Islands, where the Pacific Plate is thrusting northeastward towards the subducting Sunda : Ranked 14th. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the eastern Indonesian arc complex and its bearing on the exploration of hydrocarbon resources. As a premise, a structural continuity along the Sunda-Banda Tectonic evolution of eastern Indonesia: J. A. Katili arc is postulated to account for the geology of eastern by: 9.

Geology Indonesia appeared from under the Southeast Asian seas as the result of the Indian and Australian plates colliding and slipping under the Sunda Plate, sometime in the early Cenozoic era around 63 million years ago. Plate tectonics of Indonesia This tectonic collision created Sunda volcanic Arc that has produced chains of islands of Sumatra, Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands.   Indonesia is a dangerous country to call home. Precariously located above the grinding and mashing of several tectonic plates, and ringed by a chain of fire-breathing volcanoes, the country's.

Purpose This introduction presents an overview of the regional geology, tectonics, and metallogenesis of Northeast Asia. The major purposes are to provide a relatively short summary of these features for readers who are unfamiliar with Northeast Asia; a general scientific introduction for the succeeding chapters of this volume; and an overview of the methodology of metallogenic and tectonic. Structural geology. The tectonics processes in Indonesia formed major structures in Indonesia. The most prominent fault in the west of Indonesia is the Semangko Fault or the Great Sumatran Fault, a dextral strike-slip fault along Sumatra Island (about km).

The formation of this fault zone is related to the subduction zone in the west of Sumatra. The Geology of Indonesia/Halmahera Cited by: Geology & Tectonics Geology The general geological features of Indonesia are shown in Figure The basement formation is metamorphic and it is intruded with plutonic formations.

The oldest rocks of Sumatra Island are gneiss, schist and File Size: KB. investigation of Indonesian geology was the book “The Geology of Indonesia” (van Bammelen, ). This was the first comprehensive report on the regional geology, but described the geological evolution of the archipelago in terms of the pre-plate tectonic geology and tectonics of Eastern Indonesia book known as “Undation theory”.

The idea to produce this book originated during the "Tectonics and Sedimentation of Indonesia" seminar, the first regional meeting of the Indonesian Sedimentologists Forum (FOSI), the sedimentological commission of IAGI, in The meeting was conducted to commemorate the 50 years anniversary of the publication of van Bemmelen's book, entitled "Geology of Indonesia" ().

Plate tectonics is the most important concept in modern geology. This section will introduce you to the concept of plate tectonics, how it works, why it is important and how it is shaping the world today.

Describe and compare different types of plate motions, rates of motion and the driving mechanisms and forces involved with each. An outline of the geology of Indonesia. ) In Figure 3 this area includes the Eastern before discussing these evidences it is useful to briefly outline the geology and tectonics. The occurrence of a number of microcontinents in eastern Indonesia makes the geology and tectonics of the region more complex.
